Powerless – 1st Part of 1st Step

“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.”

The only Step we do perfectly is the first half of Step One. “We admitted we are powerless over alcohol.” The way we do Step One perfectly is by not picking up and using. To work Step One perfectly means we do not pick up and use, no matter what. Instead we pick up the phone and call our sponsor, we call another person in recovery or we go to a meeting. Remember, the first half of Step One is the only thing we do perfectly in recovery.

We learned that we had to fully concede to our innermost selves that we were alcoholics. This is the first step in recovery…

We alcoholics are men and women who have lost the ability to control our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control. All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such intervals – usually brief – were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization. We are convinced to a man that alcoholics of our type are in the grip of a progressive illness. Over any considerable period we get worse, never better. (Alcoholics Anonymous, page 30).

This admission of our powerlessness is the foundation that our recovery is built upon. Admitting our powerlessness means acknowledging our complete inability to control or change a person, place, thing, circumstance, and/or event. This admission requires rigorous honesty. In working the First Step we admit who and what we are. POWERLESS. The First Step gives us the opportunity to demonstrate the spiritual principle of honesty.

Lest we forget:
*Honesty is the spiritual principle we practice in Step One.
*Continue to do your Daily Checklist at the end of each day.
*Perk your ears up and listen closely to First Step key words and concepts discussed at meetings.
*At meetings, share your experiences with the First Step, its key words, and the spiritual principle of honesty.

You will have one week to complete each exercise. At the end of the week, you will need to go over your Step Work with your sponsor and share with your Stepworkshop group.

To continue with the remaining exercises in the Stepworkshop, you will need to register to attend our weekly online meetings. During the online Stepworkshop meeting, you will have the opportunity to review your work with the group and you will receive your new assignments and exercise for the following week.
