Step One of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous
“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Welcome to the new participants that will be joining us for the next meetings. We will continue looking at powerless this week in the Stepworkshop. As was mentioned in an earlier blog, Powerless – 1st Part of 1st Step the only Step we do perfectly is Step One and the way we do it perfectly is by not picking up and using…. no matter what.
One of the exercises this week is to define powerlessness in one word. Be prepared to discuss your stepwork with all your assignments and exercises completed at your next Stepworkshop meeting. You may also share your completed stepwork with everyone below in the Comments section.
You might want to hold off on doing your Practice Exercises until you’ve had a chance to listen to the Speaker Tapes. Listening to the tapes first might help you with definitions and in answering your questions. You can always download the Speaker Tapes to ipods, cd’s, etc., so you an listen to them while you’re traveling, doing housework, working out or whatever.
This week the Speakers Tapes are:
Alanon: Mary Pearl 2nd tape in 12 Steps series
The Stepworkshop Groups began on January 9, 2011. To start at the beginning of this Stepworkshop series, please go here. To do ALL the assignments and exercises with complete instructions, you must register and attend our online Stepworkshop. Go here to register.
Everyone from the recovery community is welcome to share their thoughts listening to this weeks speaker tapes or with working Step One. Please share your experience, strength and hope with us in the Comments sections below.
Lest we forget:
*Honesty is the spiritual principle we practice in Step One.
**Honesty is the ability to be honest with yourself.
***Perk your ears up and listen closely to First Step concepts and key words during discussions meetings.
****At meetings, share about your experience with the First Step and its core principle honesty.

Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the suggested speakers so far. Sandy B I particularly enjoyed. I am soon to move on to the 3rd exercise on step 1 and will continue posting. So far I have thoroughly enjoyed the process..
Thanks for taking the time to set this site up.
As I have been meditating on step one it is humbling but in that
humility comes freedom as well. Once I surrender to alcohol, people,
places and things…. life becomes very simple. I ask my HP not to
drink for the day, do the best I can for the day, be responsible for
my children, retire at night and thank my HP for a sober day. I don’t
care how much time anyone has it is this simple.
